Aniline's Workplace Radar: Tracking Trends & Transformations

Aniline’s database contains nearly 14 million reviews related to the Workplace topic - the most of any of the nine topics in Aniline’s scoring matrix.

The Workplace topic contains employee opinions about the overall work environment: physical, virtual and cultural.  Aniline Generative AI contextualizes and categorizes these opinions into 7 distinct subtopics, then assigns Workplace topic and subtopic scores to each of the more than 70k companies in our database.

Early 2024 has seen a number of significant changes to Aniline’s Workplace topic.  In January, the number of new employee Workplace opinions jumped by 17% from the previous month - nearly a record high increase in signal strength.

We observed significant month-over-month changes on several key subtopics in the February 1 Aniline scores, which reflect the most recent review data through January.  Specifically, the Culture, Work Load, and Safety/Physical Environment Scores changed by record amounts.

Aniline’s scores function as a living barometer for insights into specific companies, but they also capture large-scale workforce trends.  What might these early 2024 changes reflect? Aniline’s database enables us to make several high-level speculations.

In 2023, the labor market experienced several major upheavals and transformations that might prompt significant changes in employee experiences.  We witnessed the acceleration and increased adoption of new, transformative technologies like AI that might improve sentiments about workload, tools, and productivity.  There were also waves of continued layoffs in several major industries that could damage perceptions of culture, as well as a continuing push to return to office that might raise the salience of teamwork and physical environment.

Which Factors Matter Most?

Which Workplace subtopics matter most to employees?  Interestingly, although Culture, Teamwork, and Duties are the three most commonly discussed subtopics across the nearly 14 million Workplace reviews in Aniline’s database, the subscores that most strongly impact the overall Workplace Score both over time and across all 70k+ companies in Aniline’s database, are Tools & Productivity, Location, and Teamwork.

However, the impact of the various subtopics varies over time.  For instance, in February 2024, Culture, Teamwork, and Duties had the strongest impact on overall Workplace scores.
